US Ambassador to India Eric Garcetti addressed speculations surrounding a potential meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President-elect Donald Trump, emphasizing that one-on-one interactions will be pivotal in strengthening ties between the two leaders.
Responding to questions about whether Prime Minister Modi might be invited to Trump’s swearing-in ceremony, Ambassador Garcetti clarified, “I can’t speak to that. I don’t know anything about the invitations.” However, he highlighted the close camaraderie between Modi and Trump, adding, “I do know that Prime Minister Modi and President-elect Trump are incredibly close. I look forward to when they meet directly.”
Garcetti hinted at possible meetings, suggesting that the first interaction could take place in Washington, followed by another meeting in India during the QUAD Summit later in the year. “It’s not about invitations to a crowded swearing-in. It’s about the one-on-one conversations that will define the next chapter of our relationship,” he remarked.
Reflecting on his tenure in India, Garcetti described the India-US relationship as one with “endless possibilities and without any limits.” He highlighted key developments, including growing military collaboration, increased investment flows, and cultural exchanges. “If you want to work on the future, come to India. Vice-versa, we’re seeing India’s growing presence in the US,” he said.
Garcetti also announced the upcoming inauguration of a new US consulate in Bengaluru, a move aimed at deepening ties between the two nations. “We are so excited to see optimism, hope, and progress in India,” he said.
On a personal note, Ambassador Garcetti expressed his deep connection to India. “This has been the most extraordinary job of my life. Being in the right place at the right time with the right relationship has been transformative. India has truly captured my heart,” he concluded.
The Ambassador’s remarks underscore the growing significance of the India-US partnership and the role personal diplomacy plays in fostering stronger bilateral ties.
